  • Population Mental Health: The Intersection of Individual Experiences and State Sociopolitical Environments Abstract: Decades of research documents robust linkages between exposure to stress and adverse mental health outcomes. While prior research often focuses on stress processes at the individual level, the sociopolitical environment has the potential to reduce the mental health burden of stressful exposures. Using nationally representative survey data from the Household Pulse Survey (2020-2022), this talk will consider how individual-level stressors and state-level policies intersect to shape mental health outcomes in the United States. Results show that a range of state-level policies (e.g., paid sick leave) can reduce the mental health consequences of stressful experiences (e.g., financial hardship). Findings from this study point to state policies as important structural determinants of mental health with especially salient mental health consequences for marginalized groups. Bio: Rachel Donnelly is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Vanderbilt University. Her research focuses on social determinants of health across the life course, with an emphasis on stress, work, and family relationships. Moreover, her research considers how disparate experiences based on gender, sexual orientation, and race/ethnicity (and intersections therein) shape mental and physical health outcomes.
